Well, actually at the time, the entire world was corrupt. God selected a family to survive, rather than destroying the entirety of humanity. "The Lord was sory that He had made man and He grieved in His heart," because the "every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
However, God chose to allow man to survive through one family, rather than destroy the entirety of the species. This is an expression of God's grace rather than some "jerkiness" that might be there. He could have killed every member of the species, but no, God allowed one family to survive so that humanity may survive. From that family, our species was repopulated.
No, I do not believe that God is a jerk since he was only looking out for our best interests. His judgement is intense and powerful, and sometimes we don't understand, but we have no real right to sit in judgement on Him.
That last paragraph was my opinion of course but I think I could justify it Biblically if I needed to.
