Several years ago, a designer bakery opened up in
my neighborhood. It's very obviously woman owned. Their bread
is lousy, and I could barely afford it when it is day-old-bread,
let alone contemporary. But at least you felt as if you were
advancing the status of women by supporting their business.
And then Dunkin' Donuts wanted to move in, two blocks away.
Businesses in my town need approval by some board in order
to operate. There's some sort public hearing that's
part of the approval process. Well, this designer bakery put
these scary flyers all over their store and around the neighborhood,
warning people about the horrible congestion and traffic that
Dunkin' Donuts would create if allowed to do business, and
urging people to go to the Dunkin' Donuts hearing to voice
their objections.
Of course, this was all bullshit about the horrible traffic
congestion that Dunkin' Donuts would create. They were afraid
the donut shop would take away their business. It was pure,
unadulterated, propaganda -- the worst kind of lie.
Evil Dunkin' Donuts was granted approval to operate. They're
still in business, as is the designer bakery. I have lost
my taste for shitty bread.
