The thrill of *almost* being caught
The self-effacable confidence of knowing something another does not.
To escape a truth or realism you find unpalatable or in conflict with your own values.
To make ourselves feel better
To make others feel better
To give confidence (kinda like the above, but subtly different)
To gain advantage
To hide themselves from memories of past hurt
Because it worked before
It worked for someone else (brother, sister, friend etc)
Because they don't know better
Feelings of insecurity
Peer group pressure
To get out of doing something
To divert attention to someone else
To get thru a day in life
